Marko Garlick - Kristin School (2015)
An outstanding student throughout his school career, Marko not only excelled academically but also as a sportsman and leader. As School Prefect and House Captain in 2015, he displayed immense dedication, organisational ability and initiative. He was a member of the Kristin 1st X1 Football and Cricket Teams and the Eastern Districts U18A Cricket Team, as well as competing in Monetary Policy Challenge. Marko claimed a string of academic awards across all of his subject areas last year and received offers of the Victoria Vice Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship, University of Otago Academic Excellence Scholarship and Kelliher Economics Foundation Award. This year he will be studying Law and Commerce (LLB/BCom) at Victoria University of Wellington.
Cerys Chau - St Cuthbert's College (2014)
Cerys is a brilliant scholar and leader, who achieved much in her time at school. During her IB studies she was awarded the St Cuthbert's College Top Academic Excellence Award for IB, received a University of Auckland scholarship and was a semi-finalist in the Auckland Schools Debating Senior Open. A College prefect, Cerys represented the College very ably in squash, netball and orienteering.
For CAS Cerys was involved in choreographing Stage Challenge (securing a first place in the Auckland region), directed Shakespeare productions, was a peer tutor, coached debating to younger members of the College, represented our school at the Global Leaders Conference in 2014, as well as volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Whitford Bird Rescue, Elizabeth Knox Home and working at Ronald McDonald House in her holidays. At this stage, Cerys has been offered a place in medicine at the University of Sydney.
Ka Eun (Kelsey) Lee - Auckland International College (2014)
Kelsey was Dux of Auckland International College and received the Academic Excellence Award in Year 12. Kelsey received A grades for effort in every subject, every term, throughout Year 11, 12 and 13. As well as demonstrating academic excellence throughout the IB Diploma, Kelsey was AIC Deputy Head Girl and a leader of many extra-curricular activities including World Vision, Amnesty International, Production Manager for the AIC Talent Show and leader of the AIC orchestra. She participated in the Model United Nations, Auckland Debating Competitions and the NZ/Pacific Climate Change Summit 'Powershift'. She offered her time as an official translator to World Vision Korea and was a volunteer tutor to younger students in economics, geography and English literature.
Elizabeth Lunn - Kristin School (2014)
A truly dedicated young woman, Elizabeth gained academic achievement awards in a broad range of subjects throughout her education at Kristin. She was a school prefect and leader of the International Committee and also made an enormous contribution to the local chapter of SADD. Elizabeth has been actively involved as a Youthline counsellor and a member of Kristin's UNESCO organisation; she is very interested in the theatre and was awarded an excellence for technical stage management in 2014. She has also achieved a Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. Elizabeth intends to study medicine and has received numerous offers of places, including one from the University of Cambridge. She has also been offered the University of Sydney Chancellor's Award.
Catherine Zheng - St Cuthbert's College (2014)
Catherine is not just an exceptional scholar, but an all-round achiever who has excelled in many areas including music, leadership and service to others. She has achieved consistently throughout her IB studies, receiving the St Cuthbert's College Top Academic Excellence Award for IB and was Proxime Accessit, as well as winning the Rockquest Songwriting award and being a finalist in the Secondary Schools 2014 National Songwriter Awards, being part of the Chemistry Olympiad squad and participating in the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum. As part of her CAS component Catherine successfully co-ordinated the running, advertising and sorting of the Sharing Shed, a drop off station for pre-loved items that can be gifted to others that need them. A College prefect, she was also part of both the peer tutoring and Restorative Justice Circles programmes and also invested time in coaching debating for younger students.
At this stage, she is heading to the University of Sydney where she has won the Chancellor's scholarship.
Isobel Campbell - Kristin School (2013)
Isobel Campbell was IB Dux of Kristin School in 2013, receiving academic excellence awards in all of her subjects. A top student of science, she took part in the National Science and Technology Forum and was selected to go to the London International Youth Science Forum. In her final school year she led her peers as a Senior House Captain, completed her Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, served as a student librarian and in the school's Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots group. Also a talented horse rider, Isobel represented Kristin School in a number of events and dedicated time to the Riding for the Disabled Association.
Jenny Cao - St Cuthbert's College (2013)
Jenny was awarded joint Dux at St Cuthbert's College in 2013. In both Year 11 and Year 12 Jenny was selected as the Trust Board Scholar and was also awarded a Scholar Badge and Significant Scholar Award for her outstanding examination results. Jenny received High Distinction in the Australian Mathematics Competition and placed in the top 100 in the Eton Press Senior Mathematics Competition. As well as excelling academically, Jenny is a talented musician and contributed to the College as Leader of the Communications Committee.
Cici Guo - St Cuthbert's College (2013)
Cici's outstanding academic results earned her an Academic Excellence in International Baccalaureate award in 2013. In addition, Cici was awarded a St Cuthbert's College Scholar Badge and Significant Scholar Award for her excellent examination results in Year 11 and Year 12. Cici balanced her studies with co-curricular involvements including tennis, tramping, singing in two choirs and performing as part of the Korean Cultural Group. Giving of her time and energy to others, Cici coached debating teams, tutored younger students in physics and mathematics and worked as a student librarian.
Karin Ho - Diocesan School for Girls (2013)
Karin was Dux at Diocesan School for Girls in 2013. In Year 12 she was awarded the Dorothy Shrewsbury Bursary as the top student and gained scholarships in English and Chemistry. The same year Karin was selected for the NZ International Biology Olympiad Training Camp, a year ahead of other Year 13 students. In 2012 she received a Gold Award for the Chemistry Olympiad Examination. Each year since Year 9 she has been awarded Academic Honours and the Board Scholarship at Diocesan, as well as five Gold Medals in the American National Latin Exams. At 14 she received her ATCL in Piano with Distinction and in Year 11 won the prestigious Ronisch Piano Competition
Shruti Iyer - Queen Margaret College (2013)
Shruti has been a pupil at Queen Margaret College from Year 1 in 2000. At the 2013 Prize-giving she was awarded a Senior Scholar Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, the Cup for Best All Rounder and the Marion McCree Prize for Service to the Arts. A talented violinist, Shruti has been selected as a member of the National Youth Orchestra, the Wellington Youth Orchestra and the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Symphony Orchestra. Shruti has completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award. She has also been a Year 7 Mentor, a Badminton Coach and Sports Captain and attended the National Young Leaders Conference 2013.
Tamara Jenkin - Queen Margaret College (2013)
Tamara received a Senior Scholar Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence and the Templer Cup for Debating at the 2013 Prize-giving. An excellent communicator, she has received many public speaking awards and selection for the Wellington Regional Debating Team. Tamara has been very involved in the wider life of the Queen Margaret College as a coach and as a member of various musical productions and debating groups. Tamara has also been chosen as a UNICEF Youth Ambassador and as a member of the Sir Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeader's Forum.
Yang (Young) Lu - Auckland International College (2013)
Young was both Dux of Year 11 and her graduating Year 13 class at Auckland International College. Outside of her academics, she is also dedicated to international development, becoming one of three Youth Ambassadors for World Vision in 2013, where she travelled to Papua New Guinea as part of the 40-Hour Famine campaign. Young also led her school's Environmental Concerns Committee, Chamber Music Group, Investment Society and was chief editor of the student run magazine MOSAIC. She was awarded the prestigious Willmann Cup for excellence in creativity and action upon graduation. In 2013, she was also placed 2nd nationally in the NZ Economics Competition.
Sobitha Manoharan - St Cuthbert's College (2013)
Academically, Sobitha achieves consistently at the highest level while balancing co-curricular activities, both sporting and cultural. In addition, during her final year at St Cuthbert's College, Sobitha was a Prefect and Deputy Head Girl. She received a prize for Top Academic Excellence in International Baccalaureate in 2013 and was awarded a Scholar Badge and Significant Scholar Award for her outstanding examination results in Year 11 and Year 12. Sobitha is a recipient of the University of Auckland Scholarship.
Jia Wen Choo (2012)
Jia Wen has achieved outstanding academic success while at Auckland International College. Most impressive must be her clean sweep of subject awards at the Year 13 Graduation ceremony where she was awarded Best in Subject for all 6 subjects she had studied, a feat never seen before in the history of AIC. Not only this, she was awarded Dux and the Principal's award, an award that is only ever given out when there is a deserving student of exceptional ability and character. Jia Wen was also Head Girl, who contributed greatly to the school and the wider community through leadership during her time at AIC. She won a number of debating awards including best speaker at the Auckland Model United Nations General Assembly. Jia Wen is studying Biological Sciences at Oxford University.
XuRan (Phillip) Zhang (2012)
Phillip was Dux of Year 11 and 12, and received the prestigious Dean's Award for All-Round Excellence in Year 13. He represented Auckland International College in numerous debating competitions and his achievements include being the runner-up of Auckland Schools Debating Competition - Premier Junior and semifinalist of Impromptu Cup. Phillip was the co-founder and editor-in-chief of MOSAIC magazine, leader of Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter, secretary of CAS Coordinating Committee and was selected to participate in the NZ Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp. He also maintained a strong involvement in piano and in basketball. Phillip was offered a place at the London School of Economics and the University of California - Berkeley, but intends to study BCom/LLB at the University of Sydney with an Outstanding Achievement Scholarship.
Carla Boniolo (2011)
Carla received Kristin's most prestigious award, The Foundation Cup, along with academic prizes in all of her subjects in 2011, and was awarded Overall Academic Excellence in Year 12. An outstanding student with a strong commitment to all-round excellence, she admirably balanced her studies with her duties as Head Prefect and as student producer of the Kristin Fashion Show, which raised $37,000 for charity. Carla also maintained a strong involvement in netball and in the arts, performing with distinction in a number of school productions and at the National Shakespeare Festival. The recipient of a University of Auckland Scholarship and a Russell McVeagh Law Scholarship, Carla will begin her study towards a BA/LLB this year.
Harim Lee (2011)
Harim receive the NZ's Next Top Engineering Scientist Competition Highly Commended Award and the Australian National Chemistry Quiz High Distinction Award as well as being one of the Top 100 in NZ in the Eton Mathematics Senior Competion. She was awarded the St Cuthbert's College IB Academic Scholar Award in Y12 and Y13. Harim helped at the Elizabeth Knox Home, with the Motuihe Island clean-up, Habitat for Humanity and tutoring at Orakei Primary School as part of her CAS programme. After doing voluntary work in Korea for the first half of this year Harim intends to commence undergraduate study in the United States.
Elynna Yang (2011)
Elynna is an exceptional scholar, achieving NZ's Next Top Engineering Science Competition Highly Commended Award and the Australian Mathematics Competition Distinction Award. She was the recipient of a St Cuthbert's College Scholar's Award in Y11 and IB Academic Scholar Award in Y12 and Y13. As part of her CAS programme, Elynna helped with tutoring at Orakei Primary School and Habitat for Humanity. She competed in the ASB Polyfest Cultural Festival where her team, the Chinese Dance Group, received the Excellence in Performance Cup. Elynna has enrolled to study a conjoint BA.BE at the University of Auckland.
Karl Zhu (2011)
Karl Zhu was born in Fuzhou, China. Now a citizen of New Zealand, he has been earning academic awards in a range of subjects right through his high school years. He excels in Math and Science, but is also a highly intuitive student of literature. He plays guitar and table tennis, and hopes to work as a missionary at some point in the future. Karl was dux of Auckland International College in Year 13. He currently holds offers from a number of universities, including UCL and Kings College in London, and the University of Michigan in the USA, but intends to complete his first degree at the University of Auckland.
